1. What logos does Quindlen use? “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that neophyte drivers of 17 have about a third as many accidents as their counterparts only a year younger.”  “car crashes are the No. 1 cause of death among 15- to 20-year-olds in this country.”
  2. What pathos does Quindlen use? “If someone told you that there was one behavior most likely to lead to the premature death of your kid, wouldn’t you do something about that?” “A mom and dad rise from their seats on the athletic field or in the gym to accept a diploma posthumously.”
  3. What ethos does Quindlen use? She wrote the article for Newsweek.
  4. How persuasive was Qunidlen overall? She was not very persuasive overall. She did not logically reason why there should be a higher driving age. The article didnt convince me at all.

10.Summarize the following passage and explain why Paul did what he did:

I cannot write that down. This quaking, sobbing woman who shakes me and cries out on me: “Why are you living then, when he is dead?”–who drowns me in tears and calls out: “What are you there for at all, child, when you——”–who drops into a chair and wails: “Did you see him? Did you see him then? How did he die?”
I tell her he was shot through the heart and died instantaneously. She looks at me, she doubts me: “You lie. I know better. I have felt how terribly he died. I have heard his voice at night, I have felt his anguish–tell the truth, I want to know it, I must know it.”
“No,” I say, “I was beside him. He died at once.”
She pleads with me gently: “Tell me. You must tell me. I know you want to comfort me, but don’t you see, you torment me far more than if you told me the truth? I cannot bear the uncertainty. Tell me how it was and even though it will be terrible, it will be far better than what I have to think if you don’t.”

This is when Paul is telling Kemmerich’s mom that he died instantly. He decided to lie to her because he did not want to tell her what really happened because he knows it would make him upset and he wouldn’t be able to go back to the front the same way.

Trenches, trenches, its horrible there
Rat infestation
And nits in our hair

Rotting carcasses lie
With the stench of a thousand deaths
Many thousands die
After taking their last breaths

Some at the trenches might be relieved
But others face a death
They could not have conceived

This poster is from the UK and is telling you that if you are a friend to the country, than you will join the army. It is persuasive because it questions your loyalty and friendship with the country. This is very effective.

I hear gunshots coming from somewhere. I don’t know where it came from. I see Bob next to me and he is sick. I don’t know what to do. The shots could have come from anywhere. Could I be the next victim? Would I ever be able to go home? Am I going to survive another day? I wish I wasn’t here anymore. I saw a shot hit Bob and I knew that I might not last much longer.

Today I read Eragon. I like the adventure in it and the constant change of setting. There are new characters constantly coming in and many conflicts, both internal and external, but I just want to finish the book.
